Which begs the question: then why place so much buried history in  
these books? If the point is what folks are doing to themselves, why  
bother with all the dropped hints and historically reconfigured  
trails, why throw in so much otherwise concealed history of Black ops  
in America? Why drag in our governments dirt? It's not an accident  
that Pynchon includes that material in these books and there is an  
easily recognizable pattern if one is willing to look.

I mean, who the hell did Zoyd bite? Mucho? Count Drugula, well okay— 
you could talk long and hard about the toxic expansion of the drug  
culture into coke, but Zoyd? All he ever wanted to do was find his way  
back to the tonic, fer christ's sakes.
