Whatever one thinks about Robin's insights (which in many cases I find
interesting) I think reading the Long Goodbye (which I just finished
here in Eau Clairre WI) is very much an insightful template for some
of the goings on in IV (and Altman's film version which changes things
around plot-wise and may be even more significant for IV seeing the
closer time period of 70s LA)
One of the more interesting parallels revolves around Marlowe's
motivation for helping Terry Lennox and the drunken writer Wade with
Doc's involvement with Coy
among others
