But, at least taking LSD gives one a chemical reason for the altered  
state. And, the chemical reaction wears off. When one gets into  
extreme non-ordinary states by using the mind and thoughts, in  
Western society they often get labeled psychotic or schizophrenic,  
and there's always a psychopharmologic solution to regain 'control.'  
Mr. Grof himself was aware that these non-chemically induced states  
are not (always) pathological, and edited a book to give Westerners  
some understanding of such, and set up a coomunication network for  
people who land there and would like some guidance for navigating the  
waters.
