GR translation: wallpaper awhisper with peacocks

Here is another meaning of 'whisper', 'awhisper' wherein it is soundless:
"[usually in singular]a slight trace; a hint:he didn’t show even a whisper of interest"

If this is the meaning of 'awhisper', same as whisper from all I can determine just 
an older usage and where whispering might be misleading (because of sentence construction)

I think 'awhisper' starts a dependent clause containing that whole peacock and mansion and
grave scene very faint as the wallpaper pattern...the wallpaper pic is "a slight trace; "a hint'

We have all seen such wallpaper, yes? Such barely-there patterns in them (and other things)?
