fyi, German translation of that passage:

Der Chor, der sich für diesen Abend zusammengefunden hatte, bestand
nur aus Männern. Betreßte Schultern waren in den weißen
Halsausschnitten der weißen Roben zu erkennen, und viele der Gesichter
waren fast genauso weiß, erschöpft in feuchten Schlammfeldern, auf
nächtlichen Flakwachen, an vibrierenden Halteseilen von nervösen
Ballonen, die in den Wolken nach der Sonne fischten, in Zelten, aus
welchen Lichter in der Dämmerung, verlorenen Seelen gleich, radioaktiv
durch die Kreuzschraffur der Leinwand glommen, die sie in feine Gaze
verwandelten, ein Trommelfell für den Wind.
