My fallible memory concerns the description of a sweeping historical novel about America ( and more).....that was not the historical novel set in the 1700's.
More bloviating speculation.....Vineland was conceived and written between these others as certain themes re UnFurling America---his California novels----found mental, then physical form.
Vineland was never mentioned as part of his lifetime Novel-Ideas plan---that I know of....
