1) No advance $2) No distribution to most bookstores 3) No sales effort, no real marketing 4) Outrage
on the part of most of his buyers (most still thru bookstores) for selling out to THEIR perceived Satan---especially
for a neo-Luddite 5) still only about 25% of ALL book sales happen via Amazon ( and for many many fewer---therefore
for some, many more)

Don't get paranoid, but why shouldn't a writer, especially of Pynchon's renown, just sign with Amazon and bypass the Random-Penguin droppings altogether?  He already seems to write his own blurbs. But maybe Melanie has already threatened/hinted about taking that option in her negotiations- old options close and new ones open up.

fewer options for writers...often means less competitive offers....
(but I don't think in this case Melanie opened it to competitive offers....she wanted Cape for
workling reasons and just tried to get her best fair deal...)

'Nother dumb question. How does the recent consolidation affect such dealings, if at all?

M & D and AtD are also Cape so, yes, it looks like Ms. Jackson
has made separate English pub deals.....(In some cases having to get/buy the rights back, I would think)

For the record, who were M&D, ATD and IV published by in England? I'm to lazy to look it up or comb the archives.
