David, I did get a little carried away with my own exuberant rhetoric: I
think your reading is quite reasonable - rather than Their vacillating back
and forth as the Anubis heads toward inevitable notice (the Anubis affair
could be a Man from UNCLE title, but Pynchon likes affairs, ie Fashoda,
Novi Pazar...) it could as well be a moving-from executioner's silence
toward some kind of public mayhem, so that we can picture Them as closing
in and readying Their explanations to rationalize what is quite simply
predation...

And Mark, the Big Time novel you point to could serve as a thematic link
between this GR passage and the time-travelers themes in both AtD and the
poignant one in BE (well, the AtD ones are also quite poignant)
