Vibe-like shenanigans

Coincidentally I've recently been re-reading the excellent Secret
Ritual and Manhood in Victorian America by Mark C. Carnes which casts
a quizzical and scholarly eye on the millions of 19th century US
fellows who joined the frickin hundreds of secret societies with
esoteric rituals and stupid names and titles that pretended to some
ancient heritage back then. Does a nice job picking apart the
sociology of exclusivity, and how masculinity and privilege and class
and goats got all tangled up in ways that sound laughable but are
maybe also symptoms of something terrible and pervasive.
I've only skimmed that nymag article but getting the same Vibe.
