On M&D cover and ampersand:
- from the archives, Davemarc quoted an article in the NY Observer by
Warren St. John, detailing the way in which TRP was involved in the
cover creation: http://waste.org/mail/?list=pynchon-l&month=9705&msg=15495
- this post is referred to in an article in French by Gilles Chamerois,
available online, discussing the ampersand at length:
http://www.revue-textimage.com/04_a_la_lettre/chamerois1.html
- another article on the ampersand is by Samuel Cohen: Mason & Dixon &
the Ampersand." Twentieth Century Literature 48.3 (2002): 264-291
As for the dedicaton: young Jackson was at the time learning to read, I
think - the boy was 7 at the time. So you can read the dedication as:
for Melanie (now) and Jackson (later). My 2 euro cents.
Good luck with this read -and best wishes for 2015 to all.
