until the 20th Century...[from Leavis thru Raymond Williams, among
others I do not know of]  cannot understand how the urban density of
London--an Orgy of Insult uninterrupted-- can keep down the murderous
impulses----see sociologists on greater violence and murders in
cities---

Mason tells him, basically, one gets used to it.

The City here can remind, perhaps, of Pynchon's seeming to feel that
the media, a modern audience as 'An Orgy of (possible) Insult"  he
vowed to avoid all his life...and, less speculatively associative,
cities are bad shit places in most of his work from V. thru BLEEDING
EDGE.
