M&D preambulatory profferings

Starting to read through the M&D posts and since I am not always on the same page as Alice I just want to agree that this is  a delightful discussion all around. 
One interesting mention of Cherrycoke's delinquent youth concerns what sounds a lot like whistleblowing journalism. I wonder if, considering also his sorrows over the lives lost in the war, there  is a hint of TomPaine in the Reverend. TomPaine tenderized by time and the cost of great adventures and the drawing of lines.
