Found it.

In a letter dated 23 Nov 1962 (from the Harry Ransom center) Pynchon
mentions some stories he is working on and writes: "The optionbreaker I'm
goin to write for JBL is taking shape." This must be the short story
"potboiler" with a gland problem that he mentions to Candida.
