Brown is fecundity.  White is sterility.

It's interesting that the Japanese color for death is white, but the
Western color for death is black.

Re. fecundity, and Pynchon's love of pigs,  both featured large in the
Saturnalia festival, that is pigs and fecundity...  Pigs are a Roman symbol
of fertility.
