BtZ42/11-Why "why?"?

The episode ends with the question "Why?". Does this strike anyone else but me as tonally off? Pirate is griping about having to go in and pull out Katje from enemy territory. Why? Pirate knows damn well why. It's a petulant question, on the nose for a work that deals so masterfully with paranoia and it's accompanying questions. It has a Freshman Creative Writing 101 ring to it. Or am I missing something?
