“The Seventh Function of Language” is the new one by Laurent Binet (author of the magnificent “HHhH"). Binet is French (the book is translated) which is cool becuase the tale is about the traffic accident which beset Roland Barthes in Paris in 1980 and, in the story, how a certain police chief was dispatched to check it out.

Poor guy - he gets a “translator” to help with the semiotics and deconstruction of the witnesses and suspects and concerned citizens - Jacques Derrida, Umberto Eco, Gilles Deleuze, Michel Foucault, and Julia Kristeva, even President Mitterand. The fictional translator’s name is Simon Herzog and he’s a brilliant deductor of clues - or signs if you will - like the guy his initials point to - SH. - lol -
