I agree on the point about the inconsistency and over-glamorisation of
Russia by the leftist chic/luxury communism brigade, much of it fuelled by
the idea that anything which subverts Western life must have some merit.
This has proven a more perniciously endemic view amongst the modern left
than many are prepared to recognise or admit to. The Guardian’s comments
page now regularly defends positions and individuals they wouldn’t have
dreamed of advocating for 25 years ago.
HOWEVER, while we can agree that both Putin and Assad are terrible people,
I slightly demur on your opinion over Syria. Assad is at least a secular
leader and was (before we alienated him) something of a known entity for
our diplomatic services to deal with. He’s a butcher of course, but no more
so than many of the dictators we continue to readily support, and I believe
he’s less dangerous than side he’s fighting against.
Awful though this is to contemplate, and apologies for the
over-simplification, Syria seems to boil down to a choice between Assad and
ISIS. I don’t believe it’s just Kremlinbot propaganda to think that Putin
may have backed the right horse over Syria while Obama may have backed the
wrong one.
(I’m also aware of the argument that the war’s really about who gets to
drill an oil pipe line through Syria, which regrettably I also find quite
plausible.
