The "But … “ paragraph  is Yashmeen taliking as far as I can tell.( there is a paragraph change coming after Kit speaks and  before "But… " and another following in which is Kit speaking again).   She is respoding to his version of himself as”pretty practical” and that his focus on Vectors did not allow much luxury including sexual indulgence. In other words, Yashmeen wonders if he, like her, was distracted despite his mathematical devotion,  there always being something or someone to distract. It sounds like Yashmeen is disclosing her own extra-curricular distractions and fishing for sexual interest and Kit is very interested but wary.
