I'm less certain, David. The phrasing in context leaves it open to whether
the "warning" is an objective prompt on a subjective one. She has
determined she is Katje from now on, prompted to this choice by a social
"death" that frees her from her fear of that death, and from doubt
regarding her identity. She freed, thus, from her life as a woman waiting
on men. She is warned that, if she persists as she has, the outcome will be
undesirable. It seems to me one of those nuanced phrasings that elevates
Pynchon above the pack of his literary cohort.
