For the 208c to be MIDI-capable, it first needs Buchla's "208c MIDI Expansion" card. This comes automatically
In order to get DIN MIDI into the 208c or out of the 218e, you'll need a small "5XIO" from Buchla USA for each module.
A typical setup for a 208C and a 218e V3 would be a Docking Bay model with a 5XIO and a V3IO, like pictured below. This

- Imported Aluminum case shell
- Exterior and interior anodized silver, or optionally coated in black with aerospace paint
- Lift-off hinges so the lid detaches fully for performing.
- Chrome latches which are inverted to stay out of your way while playing.
- Aluminum boats and power panel manufactured in USA and powder coated textured black.
- Eight plastic feet keep the case in place when at rest.
- Power supply is a top quality Buchla USA "e" series, supplying plenty of current for modules and expansion cards.
- PSU provides 18-pin header for 208c power cable and "H" headers to power the 218eV3.
- Vinyl pad fills in the extra space and serves as a hand prop while playing, like the originals (albeit a bit thinner on
this model). Available in black or oxblood red.
- Additional power distribution board can be installed in the upper boat if more connections are needed for smaller modules.
- See below image for power panel feature description.
- Casesuits, protective soft covers, are available also!
1. The "Classic" has a clean, vintage-style black power panel with just the basics, similar to the original 1970s Easels.
This model has the 12V adapter tucked under the panel and accepts an IEC cable input at 100-250VAC.
more details in photos below.
This model keeps the 12V adapter external.
A: No, all you need is a screwdriver to remove the modules. There are a few cables to hook up
and you're set! I've made some instructions to guide you through the process.
Q: Can you make them in different colors?
A: I've had a small quantity painted black for now. My painter has minimum order lots though, so getting
a single case painted a different color could get quite expensive. If you'd like a blue case, try the Cosmo-Naught.
208c and 218e compatibility -
However, we now have new modules available that have extra bells and whistles. The 208c and 218e
both have MIDI capability.
- HOWEVER -
The MIDI needs some extra circuitry to work. On the 208 Command and 218 LEM units, those extra circuits
are built into the power supplies for those specific cases.
The supplies I normally install are the 200e type, which provide more power and flexibility for future modules
but they don't have any CV/Gate translation, MIDI, or footswitch control built in.
with the 208 Command unit, but if you buy the 208c as a standalone module it needs to be purchased separately.
If you also need CV/Gate conversion, I can install the "interpreters" to assist with this.
USB MIDI and sustain for the 218e V3 can be achieved using Buchla's V3IO board and the rectangular cutout.
(see info on the "Docking Bay" version above)
configuration provides MIDI for both modules, 1/4" outs for the 208c, and sustain in for the 218e V3. If interfacing
with Eurorack is needed also, the Interpreters module can be installed in the second oval cutout.
