i think the "we" of Peter Fonda's quotation refers to America in general.
These guys are rebels but also very much american (America being the only
culture in the world which has a "tradition" of "rebellion"-- this is as old
as the Puritans, who, by the way, had a tradition of youth leaving home to
travel and work as a part of gorwing up (i.e. before being established in a
community)-- which Hopper and Fonda's characters are a prt of)
The two motorcyclists have seen the idealism and the ugly, reactionary
reality that marred America's finest decade (JFK and Bobby and MLK
assasinations, escalation of Viet Nam, etc) and which gets documented in
that same time period1968-69, by the Stones (_Let It Bleed_ and _Begggar's
Banquet_) with songs like "Gimme Shelter" and "Sympathy for the Devil".
