GRGR: TRP's French WAS Re: Une or un (Was: Paris Visit)

TRP's French is pretty funny -- the fake French in M&D with its brilliant
"arm and a leg" bilingual pun, Marquis de Sod in Vineland, the GR touches,
all in a seedy vaudvillian vein, echoing a generation of American stage,
radio and TV character actor stereotypes that took off on Maurice Chevalier
and his predecessors -- part of what, to me, gives GR such an American
feeling despite the novel's international settings and the novelist's
voracious appetite for the cosmopolitan, the arcane, the obscure. TRP casts
a wide net yet the voice coming out is unmistakably American.
