Right. Actually HAL was recapitulating computer history, backwards, as he
(it?) shut down systems and became a decreasingly sophisticated machine
before petering out altogether. Another one of those subtle allusive (one
could say Pynchonian) gestures that helps account for Kubrick's
popularity on this list.
