Yup, Edward is someone I wouldn't want to be stuck in a locked hotel room
with, with only the occasional roach to keep his stare off my skull, but
there are instances where Pointsman's paranoia, if you will, is
well-founded, namely in his obsession w/ Slothrop and what his "gift"
represents. To use a phrase Dwight Eddins in the Gnostic Pynchon uses,
Slothrop could represent the apeironic-wing of gnosticism, that strain of
anti-paranoia, existentialism, where nothing is connected nothing. So it
seems even those wittingly or not working for them are faced with the same
human sadness: cf: Blicero's view of the War--to somewhat quote Mr Petty:
"even the creepy get lucky sometimes". In these moments, both Pointsman and
Weissman are encamped with the preeterite.
