I had the same thought, and had blocked out about half of a 
screed/rant about the subject - though the basis for mine
was that the abuses against which we find frantic prose in P's
books are worthy of frantic prose 
(the existence of a class of people whose 
financial interests thrive on war, for instance -- what
does Wood think would be a good tone of prose to discuss
the worldwide effects of those people in?) 
now you have added another objection on stylistic grounds!
