The Unified Field Theory of Late Pynchon, first draft

Here's a real possibility that opens a different window on P's earnings.

Very, very often when the sales of one book do not "earn out" in royalties the amount 'advanced' then the next book's royalties might be "pooled" against the unearned royalties of Book One.

Depends, of course, on contracts, revised contracts, etc....Against the Day, if it did not "earn out" is therefore still 'earning back' its advance as copies, mostly paperback now, continue to sell...and will...

BUT, it is entirely posssible that TRP received NO MORE, or very little, MONEY for Inherent Vice!.....that its earned royalties will be deducted from that formerly advanced money.......

Money that NEVER had to be paid back whether TRP handed new books to Penguin or not.......................
