I think a writer who best exemplifies the "Late Modernist becoming
Postmodernist" is probably Don Dellilo, whose career is split neatly in
twain by his magnum opus Underworld.

Before Underworld, Late Modernist (End Zone, Ratner's Star, White Noise and
Libra being the prime exemplars). After Underworld, everything is short,
quick, experimental and style-over-substance with a lot of the "depth" of
the novel taking place well off the page. The best of this lot is the
latest, Point Omega, by a far lap.
